On January 28, 2021, Tata celebrated the first anniversary of its compact SUV Tata Nexon EV (Electric Vehicle). It was the bestselling EV in India in 2020 selling close to 3000 units with a market share of 64%.
Tata Motors has also delivered 45 Nexon EVs to the Kerala Motor Vehicle Department deployed towards the ‘Safe Kerala’ program which will mitigate about 650 tonnes of CO2 emission. The Kerala MVD will lease a total of 65 Nexon EVs for a period of 8-years from EESL.
This review will cover the battery efficiency, mileage, actual range test, charging, subsidy details, and running cost estimation(cost per km) of Tata Nexon EV in Kerala.
In Kerala, we are seeing a quicker adoption of electric vehicles fueled by the public awareness of climate change.
One of the chief aspects which deter people from buying EVs is range anxiety, i.e. worrying that the car will run out of charge in the middle of a journey. But this can be avoided by planning the journey ahead of time and booking ahead charging stations on the way.
Tata Nexon EV Charging Time
Tata Nexon EV can charge from 0 to 80% within 60 minutes using CCS2 DC fast chargers which are available in most of the major districts in Kerala.
Kerala State Electricity Board(KSEB) is working on adding more than 250 EV charging stations across the state soon. (Later in this article you can find detailed information on how to charge from fast chargers).
Alternatively, you can also charge your Tata Nexon EV in your home from a 15A plug point(AC charging) and it will take about 8.5 hours to go from 10 to 90%.

Tata Nexon EV Mileage Range Test in Kerala
Some things to note: The whole trip was covered on Drive mode, except for a 10KM range on sports mode. AC was turned on.
This is a round trip in Kerala from Kottayam to Ernakulam and back to Kottayam on a single charge on Tata Nexon EV.
The journey starts from MK Motors Tata showroom, Kottayam. The battery is at 9%, and after charging via DC fast charger it took about 1.5 hours to charge to 100%(After 80%, charging time increase to improve battery life).
The DTE(distance to end) shows a range of 195KM, which is calculated based on your last journey. Note: DTE is a bit buggy which will be fixed soon in an OTA update.
After about 46KM, the EV still has 81% charge left. A speed range of about 60 to 70Km/h is maintained on the highway to improve efficiency. Covering 67KM, reached Kochi Infopark with still 73% charge remaining.
In Ernakulam, a small range of 10KM was driven with Sports mode. After wandering around Ernakulam for some time, started the return trip back to Kottayam with a total of 120KM covered until now with 42% charge remaining.
Reached Ettumanoor Temple, Kottayam, and 173KM covered with 23% charge left. One important thing to note is that below 25% the Sports mode of Tata Nexon EV gets disabled to conserve the battery life.
Reaching the destination from where the journey started, i.e. MK Motors, Kottayam. The whole trip had a total distance covered of 187KM and still had about 18% left.
Note: While driving an EV it is important to drive at a consistent speed, and combined with decent driving you can get about 220 to 250KM in a single charge.
Consumed 82% charge for 187 KM. Approx 2.28KM per 1% charge, so an estimated range is about 228KM in Kerala Highway for Tata Nexon EV.
Full Charging Cost of Tata Nexon EV
To calculate the charging cost of Tata Nexon EV in Kerala, the battery capacity is 30.2kWh, approx. 31 -32 units will be utilized while charging. Considering ₹6/unit, Nexon EV will cost about ₹200 per single full charge.
Cost per KM(Running cost) of Tata Nexon EV
The running cost according to the above calculation is ₹0.87/KM( For ₹0.87, we can cover 1 KM in range), which is cheap considering for ICE( Internal Combustion Engine –Petrol/Diesel) cars the cost is about ₹4.7/KM(Data used for calculation: 18KM/L mileage car, ₹85/L petrol price).

What is the battery life/battery warranty of Nexon EV?
Tata provides 8 years or 1,60,000KM(whichever comes first) warranty for the battery pack and motor. For the vehicle, Tata provides 3 years or 1,25,000 KM(whichever comes first) warranty.
How to charge Tata Nexon EV at home?
After buying Nexon EV, Tata will come and install a separate plug point with added ELCB, 25A MCB for the home charging. Installation is done free of cost by Tata. The charging cable comes in a small bag for easily taking it with you for long trips. When going for trips, you can connect the charger to a 15A plug point(the earthing should be perfect, or else charging won’t take place) and charge it overnight.
How to fast charge Tata Nexon EV from KSEB and other fast charging stations?
You can fast charge your EV using CCS 2 DC fast charging in the above-mentioned EV charging stations. The charger has a control panel with a touch display. Unlike Petrol pumps, you can directly charge your EV yourselves without needing help from any staff.
After waking the touch screen click Start Charge and connect the appropriate charging gun to your EV. After connecting, the charger will show ‘Authorization…Please Wait’. After about 10 seconds, the charging will start after some initial automatic tests.
The led light will turn completely green after the charging is complete. It takes about 60 minutes to charge from 0 to 80%. If you are in a hurry there is also an option to charge only up to a certain percentage.
How to find the nearest EV charging stations?
You can use the Electreefi app to find the nearest electric charging stations by KSEB, ANERT, etc. You can also pre-book a slot for charging, therefore preventing any waiting queue when you reach the station. Is there any subsidy on Tata Nexon EV in Kerala?
Nothing official has come out regarding subsidy in Kerala. But Delhi Government has recently pushed the ‘Switch Delhi’ campaign to promote the use of electric vehicles and has started providing a subsidy of up to Rs. 1.5 Lakhs and removed all road tax and registration fees for electric vehicles.
Even in Kerala, the Road tax is comparatively lower for Electric vehicles. Even the latest procurement of Tata Nexon EVs by Kerala MVD is a good sign of the Kerala government’s adoption of electric vehicles. All this points to the fact that it is likely possible that the Kerala government along with KSEB will start subsidizing Electric vehicles very soon.
Is Tata Nexon EV automatic?
Yes, Nexon EV is automatic with a circular knob in place of the gear system with 4 modes: Reverse, Neutral, Drive mode, Sports mode. In sports mode 60% of the total torque is available, but driving in sports mode can drastically reduce battery life.
Problems of Tata Nexon EV
The primary drawback is the range: Nexon EV has a range of 220 to 250KM, whereas other EVs in the market like MG ZS EV and Hyundai Kona provides 300+KM range. These cars are also higher priced than Nexon.
When going for long trips, you have to clearly plan and schedule the trip otherwise you might get stranded midway. But Tata provides 24/7 customer support and will help you in such situations.
But even this drawback will be solved within an year when the whole electric vehicle charging station infrastructure improves.

Tata Nexon EV XZ+ variant on road price in Kerala is ₹16.5 Lakhs.
Electric vehicles are with no doubt the future of the automobile industry. With the ever-rising petrol/diesel price in the country, the adoption rate for EVs by both the government and consumers will be going up exponentially.
