DELL XPS 15 (2019) Review: The beast just got better!

The Dell XPS 15 has gotten an update with the 2019 model. It includes all the best things we have in the previous model along with some of the new and improved features.

The term XPS according to Dell stands for Xtreme Performance System and is the flagship series of laptop from Dell keeping content creators and professionals in mind who like to work on the go.

Last year XPS 15 was simply the best and most of us from TechnoRivals thought there is nothing more to be done or improved with the series and boy we were so wrong!

We got the maxed out XPS 15 2019 model which sets you back at a whopping price of $2,649 but the base model starts at $1,099.

So, without much further ado, lets dig in:

Note: Like we always do, for the simplicity of the reader we have divided this post into different sections. Feel free to skimp through certain sections if you feel like it.

Dell XPS 15 Display

The Dell XPS 15 (2019) model comes with a big display change. Yes, it’s the inclusion of a new OLED display panel, that included with the 4K resolution looks so much enjoyable and makes for a pleasurable experience using the laptop.

Colors are so much vibrant and vivid in the new model and the 4K resolution makes it look so real world. There is also a non-OLED version which is also pretty good, but you know…its not as good as the OLED counterpart.

The Dell XPS (2019) can display 239% of the sRGB color gamut, while the non-OLED version manages a 210%. Both the displays score much better than the likes of Apple’s MacBook Pro 2019(114%).

Like the previous models, the InfinityEdge display reaches as close to the bezels and so thin you wouldn’t feel the gap much.

The brightness of the Dell XPS is a big draw, the 626-nit is so bright that during our tests we needed to lower the brightness a tad bit to use it properly inside the room. But it’s perfectly comfortable to use even in broad daylight under the sun. The non-OLED has a brightness of around 400 nits.

If you think a drop could shatter your iconic display, think again. The 2019 model of the XPS 15 touch-screen display is made of Corning Gorilla Glass 4. You can also buy the optional Dell Active Pen($49.99) for use with the gorgeous touch screen display.

Dell has also preloaded several software’s like Dolby Vision, Cinema Color and other useful software’s for tweaking the display.

The 2019 XPS 15 has the usual Aluminum and carbon fiber. The laptop looks and feels modern. It is also quite strong and perfect for day to day use. The lid is made of the anodized aluminum with the official DELL logo on the center.

You can take it to your office or coffee shop and is sure to turn a few heads around. The laptop looks and feels so much classy in my opinion.

The keyboard deck is also made up of carbon fiber that further adds rigidity and prevents it from making small dents and scratches. This also contains a large touchpad like the one found on the MacBook Pro but slightly smaller. It also has a power button on the upper right corner which also doubles up as a fingerprint sensor.

As I have mentioned earlier the keyboard deck and palm rest near the trackpad are made with premium materials like carbon fiber, this allows the 2019 XPS 15 to stay relatively cooler to the touch.

There is also a camera on the top end of the bezel, it is remarkable to see DELL managing to fit a camera in such a small bezel.

The laptop weighs at around 4.5 pounds and the dimensions are 14.1 x 9.3 x 0.5 inch.

Like the 2018 model, this year’s updated model also comes with plenty of ports and slots that makes computing much better and easier.

There is also a USB 3.1 Type-A port, a Kensington lock a battery indicator button and an SD card reader on the right side of the device. The Dell XPS remains one of the few premium laptops that offers an SD card reader. On the left side of the laptop we can see yet another USB Type-A , a Thunderbolt 3.0 Port , HDMI 2.0 and 3.55 mm jack and a DC power port.

The thunderbolt 3.0 port allows transfer speeds of up to 40 Gbps, which is 8x faster than the traditional USB 3.0 and you can also charge the laptop using this port.

The laptop also comes with Killer 1435 802.11ac Wi-Fi and has a Bluetooth 4.1 chip on board. It is indeed a bold move by Dell, to go with a different wireless chip other than Intel ones.  According to Dell, this Killer 1435 Wireless AC-Adapter provides a strong and reliable connection and is designed for gaming and video consumption.

The XPS 15 has bottom mounted speakers which is pretty loud but I would have preferred a top-mounted variant. Still, the speakers are pretty much loud enough to fill a medium sized room.

Dell have installed software’s like Waves MaxxAudioPro software to enhance the sound quality of the speakers.

The DELL XPS 15 (2019) model is an absolute beast in terms of performance. On the top end model, Dell has managed to fit an overclockable 9th Gen 2.4 GHz Intel Core i9 9980HK processor with 32GB of RAM in a slim chassis.

For synthetic benchmarks we ran Geekbench 4.3, the laptop scored overall an impressive 28,882 on Geekbench. This simply destroyed the scores of other laptops in this price range. Except the MacBook Pro which managed to score an astonishing 31,012 with its 8 core Intel Core i9 9980HK CPU but then again MacOS is much more optimized than Windows 10.

The top end model of the dell XPS 15 2019 also comes with A 1TB m.2 NVMe PCIe SSD and likewise we also ran a test for the SSD. We ran the usual file transfer test, where we copied 5 GB of multimedia files and it only took just 11 secs to complete. The transfer rate during the tests was 510 MB/s. Still it was a tad bit slower than the category average of 620.3 MB/s.

In addition to the Integrated Intel UD 630 Graphics, the XPS also has the discrete Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 GPU with 4GB VRAM for more power-hungry workloads. To test this, we ran a Dirt 3 benchmark, the XPS 15 achieved 80 fps beating the category average of 68 fps.

With the beastly performance and that gorgeous 4K display with vibrant colors, the battery life takes a toll. The XPS 15, 2019 model comes with 94Wh battery and lasts only 8 hrs on our battery performance test, which included continuous web surfing on Wi-Fi at 150 nit’s brightness.  The non-OLED model lasted a bit longer at 8 hrs. and 30 minutes. Here again the MacBook Pro lasted 10 hrs. and 21 mins.

The XPS 15 can get a little heated up when gaming with the powerful Core i9 processor on board even though DELL uses carbon fiber to keep the keyboard deck cool. But during lighter tasks, it’s a breeze. After 15 minutes of playing YOUTUBE videos, the touchpad measured only 78 degrees Fahrenheit which is cool. The underside measured only 102 degrees which is also cool and comfortable to use in a laptop.

The XPS series has one of the best Webcams ever on a premium laptop. After struggling so many years with the nose cam, the company placed the camera on the top edge. The webcam measures only 0.9 inches but still has much better quality than the competition.

DELL offers 1-year limited warranty for the XPS 15, 2019 model. There is also the usual pre-installed Dell Apps like Power manager that lets you control fan speeds and stuff like that. Mobile Connect, an app that lets you mirror your smartphone to your laptop. The XPS also comes with 20 GB of free storage for a year.

The Dell XPS 15 (2019) is a perfect travel companion for all your work needs. You can also game on the laptop as it comes with decent Nvidia GTX 1650 GPU. The laptop look premium and classy. At $2649 for the maxed-out model, the Dell XPS 15 is thousands of dollars less than the maxed-out Apple MacBook Pro ($6549).

In my opinion, if you are looking for a perfect laptop in the $1200 to $3000 range, the Dell XPS 15, 2019 model is surely worth considering as it offers beastly performance with good storage space.

Also, I recommend you go with the OLED version of the XPS 15($2649) as buying the non-OLED version means that you are buying the somewhat similar 2018 model which doesn’t make any sense!
