Android 8.0 Oreo – 8 Best Features Both Under-The-hood & Beyond

Well, after much awaiting the new Android 8.0 Oreo has finally arrived. GOOGLE in the recent IO/’17 mentioned about its launch and the expected feature’s of Android Oreo.

There is always something mysterious and fun in the way GOOGLE thinks – The name of this Android Release was declared on August 21,2017 Monday. Yes you read it right, the same day of Solar Eclipse. But  I have an ironic feeling that the new Android 8.0 Oreo Logo has something to do with this eclipse thing [seriously,  both are round 😉 ]

This Android release, just like the previous Android 7.0 Nougat is concentrated on minor bug fixes, battery consumption fixes, boot time speeds etc and other common under-the hood-features. So if you’re planning to see some great and mind-blowing visual changes, you’re gonna be disappointed. But in geeks point of view, this android release has a lot more to offer than you probably expect.

According to GOOGLE, the first few sets of devices to get the New Android 8.0 Oreo Update is Nexus 5x, Nexus 6P and of course the Pixel C. Also if you are willing to take the risk of trying the Android 8.0 Preview Version on your phone, you may get the update of the stable version on your smartphone.Google has also released a device specific list of Android 8.0 flash files for developers to use, so make sure you check it out before trying the preview version.

Here are the 8 Best Android 8.0 Oreo Features & Improvements :

1. Lock Screen Customization

Yes GOOGLE has finally added a new feature in Android Oreo which let’s you change the lock screen gestures and shortcut functionalities. Now if you were using smartphones from Samsung, Xioami etc , this isn’t a big deal as these companies tend to edit the stock UI to add more functionalities to it and might have probably added lock screen customization. But this will be a big deal for those of you who have the pure stock android from GOOGLE.

In the settings menu,  there is an option called system UI tuner which is an option present since Android Marshmallow, it’s kind of hidden inside the developer options. Inside the System UI tuner, now there is an option to tune settings of the lock screen. Here you can customize the lock screen shortcut which lets you add custom shortcuts to use certain apps from the lock screen, for example you can swipe up from bottom left to open your favorite app , swipe from the right to open voice controls etc.

2. Contextually Aware Text Selection Dialog

Now usually whenever we select a text in Android,we get a couple of options like cut, copy, paste. But in Android Oreo ,things get really interesting. Android Oreo automatically identifies a selected text and provides suggestion to do more things other than the basic copy-paste function. For example if you selected a phone number, it’ll provide an option to call that person. Sound pretty awesome huh? Well that’s not all, if you select an address, it’ll give you option to show the address in GOOGLE Maps.

This is a pretty useful feature which I’m sure most Android Users have been waiting for. So hat’s off to GOOGLE for this wonderful and innovative feature.

3. New Notification Badges & Emoji’s

Android Oreo has come with a brand new way to notify users. Now whenever you have a whats-app or some other sort of notification, you will see a dot icon on the corresponding app which has notification. This lets you quickly know which all apps have notifications without using the status bar and thus reducing the mess on the status bar. The best part is, Android Oreo features a new design which lets you view the notification of an app without opening it. You can see the notifications by long pressing  on the app be which has a pending notification.

Android 8.0 Oreo has come up with a new set of emoji’s which is very well animated unlike the old ones. The emojies feature the GOOGLE’s materialistic design. So its sure to rock.

4. Auto-Fill API

Android Oreo also features an auto-fill API which makes you free from the task of manually typing over your account password again and again. This API adds a function to automatically fill details , which can be utilized by other third-party apps. The feature is a pretty new, so you will not be able to take full advantage of this features unless more apps are released which uses this API. Chrome Browser will be one of the apps that makes use of this API to automatically fill in the required details in websites.

5. Faster Boot Times

There is nothing more worse than waiting for your phone to boot-up and load your apps. Well, Android Oreo brings a solution to this. Google has worked a lot to improve the boot-times and this is very well marked by the recent Android Nougat release. With the latest Android 8.0 Oreo, GOOGLE once again
brings the boot-speed to the edge. Android 8.0 Oreo under our tests took only 18 secs in a Pixel Smartphone !!Well in my opinion that matters a lot and it is indeed a great achievement in terms of speed.

6. Picture-in-Picture feature

Only recently we got the multi-tasking feature in smartphone’s , which saved a lot of our precious time and effort, but it lacks one important feature. Ability to watch videos inside another app.Won’t it be cool if we could play a YouTube video or any sort of video while working with our office presentation. Google has finally made it possible with the Android 8.0 Oreo release. It now lets you drag a video to the home screen corner and open other apps without pausing the video.

Simply drag your currently playing YouTube video to the home screen. Then open your favorite app while watching your video simultaneously. This is officially called the Picture in Picture Feature.

7. Redesigned Settings Menu

Google has redesigned the Android 8.0 Oreo Settings menu, the settings menu look more condensed with only the ones GOOGLE thinks you use regularly are shown. There is also option called WiFi-calling , which allows you to play a call using your WiFi connection. While this feature is not supported by most carriers in India, Reliance Jio is one of the rare telecom companies that support this feature.

Android 8.0 Oreo also has a better RAM management, battery consumption fixes and many more. The settings menu has been revamped to show you which app is draining battery and gives more info on the app usage.

8. Install Unknown Apps w/o losing Your Security

Android 8.0 Oreo now makes it easier to install unknown apps from the play-store. Instead of checking the “Allow unknown sources” box and making yourself completely vulnerable , you can now define the sources you wish to allow the app installation from. Thereby protecting yourself from other malicious sources which takes advantage of the old feature. Android 8.0 also keeps your device safe and secure with GOOGLE Protect which is enabled by default in Android 8.0 Oreo.It keeps you aware of unwanted apps and notifies you to delete it.

So these are the Features of Android 8.0 Oreo by GOOGLE. Overall Android 8.0 Oreo is easily the best smartphone OS released by GOOGLE. But only time will tell whether these features are really worth praising 🙂
